Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London) in London, was raised by the mother, her grandmother, and her godparents. Her father was absent from her family. Ford suffered from anxiety disorder that was rooted in words as a young teenager. Ford's love for acting grew when she was young. She was a part of at the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. However, after a short period of days, she concluded that Sylvia Young Theatre School was not the right place right for her. Ford was then able to apply for a place at the Central School of Speech and Drama and was accepted on her 4th attempt. Shaun Dingwall - who later was the character Pete Tyler in Doctor Who was among her classmates. Ford completed her degree in 1993 however in the meantime, she had already made her television debut in the 1991 season of Surgical Spirit; she adopted her professional title "Catherine Tate". Tate appeared in programs on television including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London Burning. Tate was a regular performer on stage as well as a part of the Royal Shakespeare Company's season 2000-2001. Tate's stand-up comedy, which she began adding to her repertoire in the year 1996, was soon gaining the attention of her peers.
